Faculty Connection - 5 Amazing Downloads for Educators and Students

Every week, I try to bring you something new and different. As many of you know, the Microsoft site is simply gargantuan and many many free and useful resources get overlooked simply because they cannot be found.

This week, I came across the Microsoft Faculty Connection. With areas for both K-12 and Higher Education, there are many many free tutorials, software downloads, whitepapers, guides and more to explore.

I am highlighting this particular link below this week, but will be exploring the site in depth in coming weeks.

Faculty Connection - 5 Amazing Downloads for Educators and Students

In honor of National Computer Science Week (2009), Microsoft offered 5 incredible downloads for students and educators. These include:

  • Kodu – a visual programming language for children and adults who want to create games
  • Photosynth – an amazing new way to create environments from digital photos
  • Robotics Developer Studio – to create robotic applications
  • World Wide Telescope – Microsoft’s answer to Google Earth – but far better thought out and useful
  • and XNA Game Studio – another game creation application

Let the downloading begin! Have fun exploring and offering new ways for your own students to learn and create.

This comes under 2 cool FREE web graphic apps you’ve gotta try!

BBWordle

The first is a picture generating online app that takes a group of words and creates a really cool “Word Cloud” graphic. See the picture at left. This cloud graphic reflects some of the most used words from this very blog for example. You can copy and paste text or put in a blog URL and choose colors and backgrounds and fonts as well. Very cool and can be found at: www.wordle.net

sampad6c9a60240c2b4f The second is Image Chef. If you are a Facebook aficionado, you already know that Image Chef is one of the most widely used apps on the site. But if you go to their main site, you can find all kinds of fun ways to create graphics for free.  Here’s a graphic I created to the right in about one minute. :) I highly recommend this one!

Have a wonderful weekend!

PowerPoint 2010 Beta: How to make a video play in a shape

So, I'm playting around with the new PowerPoint 2010 beta version. It has lots of new and exciting features, but for me, I can really really see where video is going to make a big big impact on presentations from now on. I've got a brief tutorial on YouTube about playing video inside a shape here but that's barely scratching the surface of capabilities.

If you ever wanted to make e-learning with say, a narrator or a small circle with a person's face with video explaining each slide for a self-running presentation, these things are all now possible! I'll create more tutorials about this in the week ahead!

Stay warm everyone on the East Coast of the U.S. and the Midwest! The snow and ice are YUCK. I cannot wait for spring!

P.S. Oh! I have a contest on our BB Facebook fan page for a $25 gift certificate to Amazon.com for providing some feedback about what you'd like to see more of at BB in 2010! Be sure and enter and become a fan. The drawing is on Sunday, Jan 10 at 9 P.M. EDT

YouTube Video Add-in for PowerPoint - you asked for it, you got it!

Use this add in to insert YouTube videos into a PowerPoint slide.

All you need to do is to provide the YouTube video URL that appears in the browser address bar, the rest is taken care of by the YTV Wizard.

Note: YouTube videos are streamed so a live internet connection is required to playback the video during the slideshow. Use the free FlashBack add-in to play/rewind the YouTube video automatically.

This (and many other free PowerPoint addins) are made available by the very talented Shyam Pillai - a Microsoft MVP (Most Valuable Professional)! Be sure and contact him and say thanks!

A LOT of people have written to the Brainy Betty site asking for this - we're happy to have found something that will be of benefit to you!

Have a great week,

Nan @ brainybetty
